Writing Tips to get Band 9 | IELTS Coaching in East Delhi

Before we should start with the technique, it is important to understand that there are two tasks in the writing section. 

Task 1 of Academic 

Task 1 of General Training

Report writing 

Letter writing

It has five types:- 

1. Pie chart. 

2. Table chart. 

3. Line graph. 

4. Bar graph. 

5. Pictorial chart.

It has three types:- 

1. Formal letter. 

2. Semi-formal letter. 

3. Informal letter. 

Note: - It is extremely important to understand after reading the statement that the letter belongs from which category.

Word limit- 150 min and 180 maximum.

Parameters to take care of while drafting your letter or report as per the marking criteria of IDP.

1. Task accomplishment 

Fully satisfies all the requirements of the task.

2. Cohesion and coherence 

Cohesion means continuity here which should be used in such a way that it does not draw attention to itself. 

Paragraphing is an important skill that should be handled wisely.

3. Lexical resource 

Using a vast range of vocabulary and has a natural and comprehensive command of lexical aspects. 

Avoid repetition of words and ideas as you are going to appear for an English test and you have to showcase how good you are at presenting this skill. 

Another important part is comparison means how well you can describe the data by describing, analyzing, and comparing the facts and figures.

4. Range and consistency of grammatical  usage

∙ The correct form of the verb to be used. 

Take care of punctuation.



Pattern for Writing Task 1 

(Academic and for General module). 

Always start from the left corner of the page. 

After successful completion of each paragraph, leave one line blank to state the beginning of the new paragraph. 

While writing makes sure your word in the next line and in the following sentences should come immediately under it. It should not be in a zigzag manner because you are going to present your masterpiece. 

Make short and crisp sentences, clear information, and a message should be passed while you write. 

Use as much vocabulary but make sure that lexical resource should not be out of the box because words like climbing, significant, noticeable, gradual, slight itself describe a meaning while depicting data and similarly in General your intent should be clear while writing a letter and answering all the questions asked in bullets. 

How to frame Task 1 for Academic? 

1. In Academic writing, you can frame a minimum of three paragraphs and a maximum of six paragraphs. 

2. the First paragraph will consist of an introduction and the introduction consists of paraphrasing the  statement which should be of 25 to 30 words. Look at the example below:

Introduction (we will paraphrase the statement given in the box)-The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much. 

3. In the second paragraph, we will give the overview of the picture which will consist of 25 to  30 words or we can even club the introduction and overview in one paragraph. 

Overview- The pie charts give nutritional information regarding three types of potentially unhealthy ingredients for different meals. Overall, dinner accounted for the highest levels of salt and saturated fat, whereas snacks accounted for the highest levels of sugar that were added.

4. In the third and in fourth paragraphs, we will describe and compare the data and use maximum lexical resources. Use the correct form of tense. Write short sentences and in an active voice. At last, if your word limit extends then you can skip the conclusion otherwise you should write it. Note: Conclusion can only be skipped in Task 1, not in Task 2. 

How to frame Task 1 for General? 

Letter writing- In letter writing, you may get formal, semi-formal, or informal letters.  

Carefully read and understand the question and then draft it. 

It is advisable to draft notes before you start as it will become easy for you to write them in the sequence. 

Use active voice and write short sentences. 

Give precise information. 

⮚ The first paragraph should consist of paraphrasing and directly announce your purpose of writing your letter in this paragraph only. 

In the following paragraphs, cover all the points asked in the question. 

After conclusion, do write closing lines of the letter. 

If the letter is formal then write yours faithfully, in case of semi-formal then write yours sincerely and in the last category i.e. informal letter which is to your friends and relatives,  you can close it by writing with love, yours truly, best wishes. 

Make sure that you use are using a range of vocabulary words. 

Avoid repetition of words and ideas. 

Last but not the least, avoid grammatical errors.
