Technique to solve multiple-choice questions:

MCQs assess your ability to comprehend a text's key ideas before searching for specific details. To pick the relevant piece of the text, you'll need to rapidly identify the primary point and to identify the primary point, it is important to understand the keywords of the question.

When you begin, it will appear that two or three of the possibilities are right, and you will need to study much more carefully to uncover the specific information that will provide you with a  reasonable answer.

Problems which are encountered by the test takers:

Not paying proper attention to the text will lead to a large number of  ‘distractors,'. You will select the incorrect answer if you do not attentively read the content. Therefore, spend some time thinking about what each sentence means.

Not reading and understanding the whole sentence. The first half of a sentence may appear proper, but the second half may affect the meaning. However, words like but and however can completely transform the meaning of a phrase. Therefore, closely monitor each word to understand the gist of a whole sentence.

If you read the paragraph before the questions, you are reading ‘blindly,' as you have no idea what you are searching for. Thereby, do not be in haste to get your answers.  Ideally, read the question, mark the keywords, understand it and then skim and scan the information

Tips to solve Multiple Choice Questions:

1. Carefully read the Question- Reading the question simply does not mean “simply reading”. It means to understand it thoroughly, mark the important keywords and then skim and scan the important words in the passage.

2. You'll usually be able to eliminate two of the four options, leaving you with two options.  Consider the differences in meaning between these two options; this will assist you in obtaining the correct answers.

3. When you are confused between two similar statements then try rewriting them in your own words to relate the words and to get a better picture. Therefore, don't be misled by the examiner's 'distractors,' particularly terms from questions that appear to be the same as the text.

4. The most important point while doing these questions is, if you're short on time or don't know the answer, make an educated guess. You will not be punished for incorrect responses, and guessing has a 25% chance of yielding the correct answer.

5. It is advisable to read the question carefully before you read the text.

Types of Multiple choice questions:-

There are three sorts of multiple-choice questions. You must either:

Select one answer from four possibilities

Select one answer from four options

Select two answers from six options.

Either, it can be:-

Choose two answers from a list of five

Choose three answers from a list of six

The most common option is the first one where you could potentially have two different types  of questions:

Either finishing a phrase or responding to a query.

Strategy to solve it quickly:-

1. Read the question carefully, particularly questions starting with (W).

2. Understand the gist of the question but do not read the options. Although you can read as it is the choice of the individual but for better clarity, it is advisable to read it afterward. 3. Mark the important keywords.

4. Scan the words related to keywords in the paragraph.

5. After hunting your related words, read two sentences before and after thoroughly and get an overview of them.

6. Now, relate the overview with the options given in the question and you will get an accurate answer.

Choose the correct letter a,b,c, or d.

Read the text below and find the suitable answer:

Imp Keywords of question:- What, bus service.

Source: Official Cambridge IELTS 14.

Main keywords of this extract- Switzerland has access to transport, a population greater than 40  has regular bus services. Time table 4 years in advance, if a new route is introduced,  the population of the area is invited to vote in the referendum.

Overview- This paragraph states that Switzerland has access to transport where the population is above 40 and timetables are made well in advance 4 years ahead. If there is any change in the timetable, it is only made after involving people in voting in favor of the referendum.

Now, as per option A- It does not state Villagers have the chance to request buses after every 4 years.

Option B- It does not state that new routes are introduced to reflect the density or increase in population. However, routes are only changed after voting.

Option C- It does not mention that bus timetables tend to change every four years. It only mentions if it will be changed, it will only be after voting.

Option D- This option goes by the paragraph because it clearly mentions that buses will be called in the village by the density of population. Therefore, this answer is correct.

Answer: Option D is the correct answer.

Hope this technique will help you out to solve this category.
