So, what are some of the reasons for taking an IELTS test?
And why is it necessary to do an IELTS preparation course?
As you'll see there are many great reasons, but first, let’s look at the background of IELTS and a little bit about how IELTS works.
How does the IELTS work?
The IELTS test assesses students in four areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Interestingly, the test doesn’t have a pass or fail system.
You will be given a band or score for each module based on your ability in the exam. You will be ranked on a scale from 0 to 9,
9 being an expert user in English, and the average of your four bands gives your overall band.
Depending on the reason for you taking the test (career, living in a foreign country, studying), you will be required to achieve a certain score.
This means that it's not just a case of sitting the exam and hoping for the best, you’ll need to prepare for it as well. With Cambridge English Academy's preparation course, you will be given the skills and knowledge needed to help you gain the scores you need.
There are two versions of IELTS: Academic for higher studies student visa, and General for work visa and Permanent Residency (PR).
The exam can also be taken in a paper or computer based format. You can get more information on these from Cambridge English Academy.
So, why might you consider taking a preparation course and completing the IELTS exam?
It will help you get into international universities.
Having an IELTS qualification brings many opportunities with it. If you’ve been wanting to study at a university abroad, IELTS is just what you need.
Many major universities ask for this English language test on their admission requirements, and the score you’ll require depends on which university you’d like to attend. The band requirements of Universities can be found on their websites.
Cambridge English Academy also offers study abroad counseling and a full student visa service, along with guidance on writing your Statement of Purpose (SOP).
It’s great for your career.
Being the world’s most popular English language test, IELTS is recognised worldwide and accepted by over 10,000 organisations in more than 140 countries. Whether you want to work for a multi-national company, in education or even in government, a good result on your IELTS certificate can help you achieve your career aspirations.
It’s accurate.
IELTS assesses candidates on listening, speaking, reading and writing, and it must be said that it has a strict assessment criteria. However, due to the test’s strict nature, you can be assured that your results are a true reflection of your English language abilities.
It covers American and British English.
As we know, there are some differences between American and British English and depending on your reasons for taking an English language test, you may need to know one more than the other. Thankfully, the IELTS test covers both American and British English. This means that if you use American or British pronunciation it will make no difference. Additionally both American and British spellings are accepted in your exam. But it should be emphasised that consistency in one or the other is desirable.
It’s widely available
You can take the IELTS exam at a wide range of venues throughout India with IDP
(International Development Programme) in one of their accredited offices. You can sit the exam in any of IDP's test centres regardless of where you live or attend your training course.
Preparing for IELTS.
Of course, in order to take the test and get the score that you need, a preparation course is essential. This is because IELTS is a complex and involved exam, and as mentioned, the assessment procedure is stringent.
You will need to understand how to answer a range of different question types and have a broad vocabulary including a good knowledge of synonyms. Naturally grammar plays a significant role in your assessment too.
For example in the Reading module you will have 3 unseen passages with a total of 40 questions for all 3. This has to be completed in 60 minutes. You will be required to transfer your answers to an official answer sheet within the 60 minutes.
(Paper based exam only).
In listening there are 4 separate audio clips, each one having 10 accompanying questions, you must write your answers while you're listening because you are only allowed to listen to the audios once. Listening duration around 30 minutes plus 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the official answer sheet (this applies to paper based IELTS only).
The speaking section takes approximately 15 minutes, and is a face to face interview with an examiner. The exam is in 3 sections: 1.The Introduction plus day to day topic questions. 2. Prompt topic (Cue card) speaking for 2 minutes. 3. Discussion tppics, related to part 2 topic.
For IELTS Writing you are required to write 2 tasks. 1. Image description (Academic exam). A letter, (General exam). Minimum word count 150.
2. Essay, minimum word count 250. Duration 60 minutes.
