MATCHING HEADERS IN THE READING SECTION OF THE IELTS TEST IS A COMMON SORT OF QUESTION THAT TEST-TAKERS FIND DIFFICULT.

You must match the heading in the question to the correct paragraph or reading section in the text for this question type. Some headings will not be used because there will always be more headings than paragraphs or sections. This type of question often consumes our time and drains our energy. There are several reasons that make this type complex. These are:-

  • It takes a little longer to finish than the other questions.

  • There are frequently more headings than paragraphs.

  • There are some paragraphs that do not require headings.

  • There are some overlaps in the headings.

  • You may be misled by headings that merely provide individual details rather than the primary theme.

  • Some heads include the same words as a paragraph, but they do not match.

Strategy to solve this tricky question type:-

There are two strategies to solve this. One can opt for it as per their level of convenience.

  •  Read the text first, then headings.

  • Read headings first, then text.

Strategy 1 (Read text first, then headings)

This is one of the easiest tricks and it consumes you less time. Merely, in just 30 to 40 seconds you will get your answer.

Steps to follow this strategy:

  1. Scan the information in the paragraph.

  2. Mark the important keywords by skimming.

  3. Get the overview of the whole paragraph. Try to understand what it says in a gist.

  4. Now, match the central idea of the paragraph with the heading because you will have a clear view of it.

  5. Sometimes it is possible that more than one heading will match. In that case, they will try to put you in a trap but carefully consider the words and relate with the message given in the paragraph.

  6. Finally, transfer your answer to the answer sheet.

Choose the correct heading for each section from the list of headings below.

List of Headings

i. Complaints about the impact of a certain approach

ii. Fundamental beliefs that are in fact incorrect

iii. Early recommendations concerning business activities

iv Organisations that put a new approach into practice

V Companies that have suffered from changing their approach

vi What people are increasingly expected to do

vii How to achieve outcomes that are currently impossible

viii Neither approach guarantees continuous improvement

ix Evidence that a certain approach can have more disadvantages than advantages

                                      Why companies should welcome disorder

An Organisation is a big business. Whether it is of our lives - all those inboxes and calendars - or how companies are structured, a multi-billion dollar industry helps to meet this need.

We have more strategies for time management, project management, and self-organization than at any other time in human history. We are told that we ought to organize our company, our home life, our week, our day, and even our sleep, all as a means to becoming more productive. Every week, countless seminars and workshops take place around the world to tell a paying public that they ought to structure their lives in order to achieve this.

This rhetoric has also crept into the thinking of business leaders and entrepreneurs, much to the delight of self-proclaimed perfectionists with the need to get everything right. The number of business schools and graduates has massively increased over the past 50 years, essentially teaching people how to organize well.

IMPORTANT SENTENCES AND KEYWORDS of this paragraph are- strategies, time management, project management and self-organization, ought to organize our company, our home life, our week, our day and even our sleep, Every week, countless seminars and workshops, around the world, ought to structure their lives

Explanation- So, the overview of the paragraph is completely talking about the strategies made for the staff and the expectations from them in order to make them more productive by saying that they (ought to- means they have to do, it is expected from them) to organize their sleep, work-life, day, home life, company, week. Before choosing the correct title, read all the titles and keep on eliminating which does not match. For an example:-

  1. (Complaints about the impact of a certain approach)- This title does not talk about any complaints. Therefore, eliminate it.

  2.  (Fundamental beliefs that are in fact incorrect )- However, it also does not talk about any belief which is incorrect. So, eliminate this too.

Therefore, when we will try to match the headings, the clear answer will be (VI).

  • Strategy 2 (Read headings first, then text).

i. Complaints about the impact of a certain approach

ii. Fundamental beliefs that are in fact incorrect

iii. Early recommendations concerning business activities

iv Organisations that put a new approach into practice

V Companies that have suffered from changing their approach

vi What people are increasingly expected to do

vii How to achieve outcomes that are currently impossible

viii Neither approach guarantees continuous improvement

ix Evidence that a certain approach can have more disadvantages than advantages

Ironically, however, the number of businesses that fail has also steadily increased. Work-related stress has increased. A large proportion of workers from all demographics claim to be dissatisfied with the way their work is structured and the way they are managed.

This begs the question: what has gone wrong? Why is it that on paper the drive for organization seems a sure shot for increasing productivity, but in reality falls well short of what is expected?

Steps to solve this:

  • In this strategy, we will read the title first and mark the important keywords in the list of headings.

  • In the paragraph, we will insist on reading the first few sentences and last two sentences of the paragraph in order to get precise information.

  • After scanning the information, we will understand the perspective of the paragraph and will look for the titles which are written in the box with the highlighted keywords.

IMPORTANT SENTENCES AND KEYWORDS of this paragraph are- number of businesses that fail,. Work-related stress has increased, demographics claim to be dissatisfied.

Explanation: These initial lines of the paragraph are suggesting that there are problems or complaints by the workers related to the organization or the approach followed by them.

Now, look in the headings, the first heading is explaining about the Complaints about the impact of a certain approach. Therefore, the answer is (i).
