Duration of Test
: 15-17minutes.

Part 1-(4- 5 minutes).

Part 2 – (3- 4 minutes).

Part 3- (4to 5 minutes).

Dress code- It is good if you can wear Formal dress although it is not mandatory. However,  wearing formals will make a better impression and create a difference.

The pattern of Speaking Test

Part 1, you will have a 4 to a 5-minute conversation with an IELTS examiner about yourself.  Topics might include:

Name and significance of the name

Work/studies

Hometown

Family

Homelife

Personal interests

Part 2, Cue Card

You will be handed a card with a topic for Part 2 of the Speaking test. You will be allowed one minute to take notes on the topic and a pencil and paper to prepare your response before speaking for two minutes on the subject.

Part 3, Follow-up Questions

In part 3, you'll have a conversation with the IELTS examiner about the topic from part 2 and go through it in greater depth. Part 3 should take you about 4 to 5 min to complete.

Tips for Speaking Test

1. Give your natural responses- Memorized language does not provide an accurate assessment of your English language abilities to the examiner therefore make sure that you answer promptly and naturally. If the examiner detects that you have memorized your answers, your final band score may be affected.

2. Use Lexical resources- While speaking, use maximum vocabulary words. Make use of a variety of words that are appropriate to the topic at hand.

However, if you want to be safe, avoid using unfamiliar terminology. It's more likely that you'll make a mistake by mispronouncing words or utilizing them incorrectly.  Your final band score can be affected by mistakes.

3. Avoid grammatical errors- As it is an English language test, so make sure that there should not be any grammatical errors in it. Speak short sentences and preferably in an active voice.

4. Continuity and Cohesion- While speaking, it is extremely important to have continuity in your answer. Build and develop your answers by adding words like firstly, secondly, following to it, consequently, lastly, etc.

5. Change in the modulation of your response- Make sure to modulate your voice and tone while giving a response as it should be like you are giving your answer naturally and in the form of a story. Speaking at the same pitch will give an idea to the examiner that you are either nervous or have memorized your answers which will lead you to scoreless.

6. Focus on your pronunciation rather than on accent- Face-to-face communication In contrast to an AI system, the IELTS examiner recognizes a wide range of accents and will be able to understand what you say during the speaking test. There is nothing to be concerned about if you can communicate well. However, because English is a  stress-timed language, be conscious of sounds that you struggle with and make sure to employ stress and intonation.

7. Manage your time- It is extremely important to manage your time in Part 2. Be sure to complete your response in a time window only.

8. Use phrases in your response- During your answers or in the beginning, use phrases  like:

That's an interesting question.

I'd never considered it before, but...

Let me have a look.

That's an excellent point.

That's a tough question, but I'll do my best to address it.

Some argue that this is the case, but I disagree...

Let me ponder that for a while.

9. Avoid fillers and speak confidently- Avoid using unnecessary words and speak with confidence. When we don't know what to say, we usually use fillers. However, this shows the examiner that you don't have access to the relevant vocabulary or concepts, therefore it's vital to avoid them and instead use the phrases. The following filters should be avoided: Like umm..., ahh..., ahh..., ahh..., ahh..., ahh...,  ahh..., well.

10. Support your answers with an example- In Part 3, if you are short of words or ideas then you can support it with an example. For example,

Q: What factors contribute to the success of the business?

Ans: There are various factors that bring success to your business. For example, for a successful restaurant or cafe, factors like a good location, good service, taste, ambiance of the restaurant, helpful staff, and customer reviews play a  vital role in the success of the business.

11. Avoid repetition of words and ideas- As it is an English test, therefore show your best skills and ability in the language by using lexical resources and by avoiding repeating the same words and ideas because it will give an idea to the examiner that you either are not good in English or you lack ideas and less able to explain your viewpoint.

Note: Cue Card

For cue cards, always give the overview of the topic, develop your story and summarise it properly. Be sure that you wind up your topic on time.
